Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to discern what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
Nowhere in the Bible does it tell us to change God’s will, it says we are to pay attention and see what it is God wants from us. The Bible never says that God will get behind our decisions, it says that we should make our decisions after figuring out what God expects us to do. A lot of people try to play the God card, thinking that God is an ace up their sleeve they can throw down and take the win… sometimes it’s an all out Jesus Juke, but more often than not it’s an attempt to silence any questioning of their opinion because they say “God told me so”.
“Well, I just really feel like God is leading me to Mizzou instead of Illinois”… which means, “I picked Mizzou, stop questioning me.” Or maybe, “I’ve been praying about it a lot, and I think Jesus really wants me to move in with my girlfriend.” …ok, that may be a stretch (but I’ve actually heard it said)… you get the point.. you can tag Jesus onto anything you want and make it sound really spiritual, but when you get down to it, we use God to justify our own behavior a LOT, even if God has had nothing to do with it at all. “I’ve been praying about it” often translates from “I’ve been kinda thinking about it”.. “we’ve been praying for you” often means “we’ve been talking about you behind your back”… maybe I’m too pessimistic, but I hear God blamed for a lot of things that I know He isn’t behind, and I also hear God thanked for a lot of things He’s not behind..
We’ve been taught that religion is a private matter, that someone’s relationship with God is their own and none of us have the right to question it… but that’s not what the Bible teaches at all. The Bible says that the will of God isn’t subjective, it can be discerned, tested and proven. 2 Timothy 3:16 says that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” … there IS a right and a wrong side to scripture, there IS a right and a wrong side of the will of God. Saying something is of God doesn’t make it so. God does not bend to my will, or to yours. We should bend to His. God is not a fluffy god of pixie dust and happy thoughts who lets you do whatever you want and get a warm fuzzy feeling in your tummy every time you mention his name… God knows your heart and intentions, and splits you apart as easily as a razor can split meat from bone.. you may fool the whole world, but you cannot fool God. His word is meant to rebuke as well as encourage, correct as well as validate. God is not a smokescreen for people to hide behind or a card that trumps criticism. If you are within the will of God, GOD will stand you tall and straight, dripping in so much righteousness criticisms can’t stick.. but if you find yourself saying things like, “well thats between me and God”, “I just feel like God wants me to, okay??”, or, “who are you to question my relationship with Jesus?” …then you may have some problems… because it’s the job of the Church to question, to test and approve, to hold each other accountable to the word and to correct and rebuke when necessary. I’ve heard a lot of people say, “I don’t need some religion, all I need is Jesus!” well, I’m sorry, but that’s not true. A gospel apart from the Church is a false gospel; one of Satans most clever lies.
Jesus himself said, “not my will, but yours be done.” He could have said “you know guys, I was up praying all night, I even cried about it… and I just really feel like God is telling me that I shouldn’t go through with this crucifixion thing… I just feel it in my heart.. sorry…”.
Think twice before you hide something behind Jesus name. Think twice when you have to separate Jesus from The Church (or from scripture) to get Him to back you up.
