A while back I wrote a post about Solomon and his great wisdom, and how our goal in life should be wisdom, not foolishness… I’ve done some more thinking about this idea of wisdom, and what that should mean to the life a Christian; what does wisdom look like?
First I had to answer the question, “what is wisdom?”… I’ve realized that wisdom and foolishness have nothing at all to do with how smart you are, but rather the condition of your heart; your attitude!
David writes twice in his Psalms (14 and 53) that “the fool says in his heart ‘there is no God.'” He goes on to say that God looks down to see if anyone understands, if anyone seeks Him; suggesting that understanding means seeking God. We are told that David was a ‘man after God’s own heart’, meaning that even though David made some pretty monumental mistakes and did some very foolish things, he still understood; he was still seeking God, David was still wise.
Psalm 111, Proverbs 1 and 9 all tell us that “the beginning of true wisdom is the fear of the LORD.”
Wisdom and understanding are found in this posture of submission; fearing the LORD, while foolishness is a posture of pride and arrogance… the fool says there is no God and so he needs no God; while the wise say God is, and He is LORD.
There are a great many intelligent people who have made themselves complete fools by standing tall in their own understanding, and a great many simple minds wise beyond belief because of their equally simple humility. A great many people call themselves Christian, yet have never actually bowed their hearts and mind to God… they still believe they’ve gotten where they are on their own, they’ve earned salvation, there is no true fear of the LORD in them. My Sunday school teacher made the comment yesterday that there is not a single evolutionary scientist who really believes in their teachings, even Charles Darwin admitted that his entire theory was a complete impossibility… total bunk that he invented because he was angry at the church of England. it’s all a smokescreen for their denial of Truth, their refusal to submit to the authority of our creator. It isn’t a more scientific theory, it isn’t even plausible, it’s just a story to distract.
The fool says there is no God, but the fear of the LORD is true wisdom.
Anything in your life seem out of whack? Are you fearing God or leaning on yourself to deal with it?
Anything in your past make you want to crawl into a hole? Was it a time when you were on your face before God, or standing tall in your own pride?
Every foolish thing any of us has ever done has been the result of our inner posture, our attitude toward life and toward our God.
Scripture is completely littered with this message of wisdom and fear vs. foolishness and pride… and it’s very clear about the end result of our posture.. submission leads to life, denial to death.
“The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God!” 1 Corinthians 1:18
