A girl I knew once said that she went to a church for a funeral, and the whole time she felt like she was being stared at, like people were wondering why the town whore had stumbled into the back row. I’m sure you’ve heard people say the same sorts of things, ‘God would hit me with lightning’, ‘the building would fall down’, ‘someone would have a heart attack’, if I ever walked through the doors of a church. I even heard a guy one time who said he would rather “party with his friends in Hell, than have to spend eternity in church”.
I think it’s sad. SO many people use these sorts of excuses to build up walls between themselves and God, but none of these arguments actually has anything to do with God! They all have to do with the people at the church and how they treat “outsiders”.
I have been to churches that made me think, “if I wanted to introduce someone to Jesus, I wouldn’t bring them here…”.
Spreading the gospel is not a battle. People WANT what Jesus offers. The first century church took Christianity to every corner of the known world within 35 years of Jesus resurrection!! What is slowing things down? Jesus hasn’t changed, the message of salvation hasn’t changed…
When did things get to the point that a “whore” isn’t welcome in church? When did sinners get the impression that they don’t belong in church? When did Christians start thinking the church belonged to them?
The world has questions, we have the answers. It’s not up to us to decide who gets to hear the good news of the Gospel. It’s not up to us to decide who is allowed in church and who has to stay out.
Shame on anyone who has ever made someone feel unwelcome at church. REPENT for the kingdom is at hand and Jesus warned it would be better for you to drown yourself than to push lost people away from him!! I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to do when I stand before Christ in Glory is to try to explain why I thought the church was a club, or why I thought i could keep His blood for myself instead of taking it to the people it was shed for!
